IRI Condemns the Shutdown of Voice of Democracy in Cambodia

Washington, DC – The International Republican Institute (IRI) released the following statement after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered the shutdown of Voice of Democracy (VoD):

“The International Republican Institute condemns Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s recent decision to shutter one of the last remaining independent media outlets in the country, Voice of Democracy. The decision to revoke Voice of Democracy’s operating license is a transparent attempt to silence the voices of the Cambodian people in advance of a critical parliamentary election taking place this July.

“This is the latest in a long list of unjustified actions taken to diminish Cambodian civic space and cripple democratic opposition. IRI maintains that Cambodians deserve the right to a free press without hindrances or interference from a government that refuses to recognize the people’s desire for a democratic future.”
