Washington, DC – The International Republican Institute (IRI) released the following statement on the passing of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

“IRI is deeply saddened by the passing of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

“As a young immigrant who came to the United States at the beginning of the Cold War, Albright dedicated her life to public service and the well-being of others. As a member of the National Security Council, Ambassador to the United Nations, and the first female Secretary of State in American history, Albright was an important foreign policy voice and a role model for women all around the world.

“As the longtime Chairwoman of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Secretary Albright was a pivotal supporter of democratic movements and a champion of liberty on every continent. She worked closely with IRI’s former Chairman, Senator John McCain, and with current IRI Chairman Senator Dan Sullivan to ensure bipartisan support for American efforts to support democratic development around the world.

“Secretary Albright’s contributions to the cause of freedom, in Europe and around the world, will be felt for generations to come. Her legacy lives in all those struggling to secure the human rights and democratic dignity that her own life, as the daughter of political refugees, taught her were universal aspirations of all people everywhere. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones at this difficult time.”
